About

There is more than one way to brew coffee. Shouldn’t there be more than one way to roast it?

As engineers, partners Colin O’Callaghan and John Fleming are dedicated to bringing today’s best roasting technology – fluid-bed roasting – to the biggest roasting companies and the smallest mom-and-pop coffee shops alike.

If you already have a drum, it’s time to use a fluid-bed as well. You must have both if you want a full range of coffees. As one of only two fluid-bed roasting manufacturers, 428 Roasters is going above and beyond drum roasters, who only add new features to old technology; we are dedicated to providing the most efficient roasting machines possible that provide a consistent-quality roast every time.

Coffee roasting takes time and patience, and fluctuates from crop to crop and from bean to bean. Your individual goals as a roaster reflect the culture your company is working to build. In order to help you build that culture our goal is to establish a positive collaborative relationship with you and your company so we can match your company with the correct roaster. We welcome all questions and requests. We can perform some work over the phone or by e-mail. If you are interested in learning more, please contact us.

About Colin

He is a mechanical engineer, but do not be fooled: Colin has lived a life well beyond textbooks and formulae, from traveling to all different parts of the world to working at a pickle factory. As a kid he made an automatic door opener to his bedroom out of pulleys and levers, and once made rocket fuel in his family’s cookie mixer and cured it in the oven with his dad.

About John

A nuclear engineer, John Fleming served six years as a nuclear reactor operator and diver for the Navy. He has traveled to Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, and Thailand, and has lived in nine states. One of them was Hawaii, where he swam with the fishes and scuba-dived and surfed with the sharks, one of whom turned out to be his wife, to whom he remains happily married.
